Alexander is the son of Silvina Otterbourne and James Anthony Winston -latter was a pseudo communist from Blackpool. Alexander and his twin sister Sidonie came home from school one day to find a goodbye letter from their mother – rolled up and tucked into an empty bottle of gin. He left Bombay together with his sister to go to England where they stayed with a friend of Silvina until he decided to become a professional race car driver. His first rallye “Paris – Dakkar” ended in a smoky hash den…in one arm the prize he had won and in the other the notorious jet setter Amanda Silvers. Back in Le Mans he met Jaqueline de Villeneuve who shared his enthusiasm for fast cars and then his bed. Nine years after their daughter Gabrielle was born they got married in Villefranche-Sur-Mer in 1971. He drove off a cliff in 1985.
